The 220W model will obviously cost less to operate.
I installed this unit in my basement about 6 months ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since.
Things I noticed:
If the power goes out, the unit will NOT turn back on automatically (as some other units do.)
If you want to use the continuous drainage (which I highly recommend) via a hose, you have to punch out a plastic disc on the side of the unit. I would have designed a screw-type plug that was replacable, but they didn't think of that. Anyway, once you punch the quarter-size disc out it's out forever.
If you choose to use the continuous drainage feature, you will need to pick up a hose with an inner diameter of 15mm (.59" or just over half an inch.) I went to the local DIY center and found some clear tubing that has worked well.
The unit can operate down to 2-degrees C (36-degrees F), which will be great for continuous operation in the garage to keep the tools from rusting.
Has three fan settings: med, high and quiet. "Quiet" really is quiet, and could probably work just fine in a bedroom. Though, it does warm the room it's in. How much it warms it depends on the humidity setting.
Four settings: The humidty level (humidstat) can be set to "continuous dehumidification" (which is the default setting), 50%, 60% and 70%. The fan will continue to run but the dehumidification processor will turn off when it reaches the selected humidity level. Cool. I mean, that's when the fan will just blow room-temp air.

The unit is not that heavy -- maybe for some, but not nearly as heavy as some people make it sound. It's 30.8 pounds.

We were having some issues with mold in our closet. We got the CFM-40 because it seemed smaller & quieter than others & we've been very happy with it. It extracts an amazing amount of water, we haven't figured out where it's coming from but the container fills up every couple of days! It's quiet and seems well made, and we have no mold now so we're happy.

I have used this dehumidifier for about two weeks and I am completely satisfied. We have had an unusually humid summer in Texas and this device has made my sunroom much easier to aircondition and much more comfortable. I need to empty the (approximately one and half gallon) tank about twice a day and I'm thinking about connecting a continuous drain hose (a feature that is built into the CFM-40) to the outside. The CFM-40 also runs very quietly, even on high speed. An excellent product.

I live in central Florida. Our winters are mild, but we have a bone chilling dampness that sets in December-March. The heat pump warms the air in the winter, but does nothing for the dampness.
I bought the Soleus one year ago. I cannot believe how much moisture it takes out of the air. I empty the bucket every morning and night. The machine has different settings so you can choose how dry you want the air. The quiet setting works just fine in our home and the machine is very quiet in that mode. It does generate some heat when it runs, but seeing as it is winter anyway, the heat is welcome. The Soleus is a snap to maintain, very lightweight and well worth the money. You can set up a hose to automatically drain the water too. Our house is 1,450 square feet of living area and the Soleus makes the entire house comfortable.

I purchased this dehumidifier to tackle my overly-humid house. I live in California, but my house is naturally very humid (around 75% on average). The humidity frequently gets up to around 80% and above in the winter as verified with a hygrometer. Mold was fast becoming a problem. I have used this dehumidifier for over two weeks now, and it is scary how well it works! I placed it in the bedroom were the hummidity was at it's highest, and it lowered my 15'x15' room from 75% to 50% in less than three hours!
It has a quiet fan that I have no problem sleeping with. The tank is easy to empty and it is light enough to move from room to room.
I have not owned any other dehumidifiers before, so I have no basis of comparison, but I am in love with this one! It was completely worth the price.

A friend loaned me her Whirlpool for a month before I decided to purchase this one. The Whirlpool unit was very loud and soured my already-skeptical spouse on the notion of dehumidifiers.
Despite her reservations, I purchased the Soleus unit. She told me a few days after it arrived that she approved of it. One advantage of this unit is that, unlike the Whirlpool unit, the fins of the heating and cooling coils are protected by the air filter and cannot be easily bent or damaged. I've had no difficulty removing and emptying the bucket full of water. It is incredibly quiet, as compared to the Whirlpool unit. It is also quite portable, though the handle is too low to the ground for the wheels to be useful. A telescoping handle like most airline baggage would have made it easier to transport from room to room. It takes approximately a day for the reservoir to fill up in my house, which has a typical relative humidity in the range of 50-65%. I've found that the unit works well for removing the humidity in one room, but due to a lack of air circulation in my home, must be moved from room to room to dry out the whole house. The air intake is in the back, so I often face the unit backwards in an attempt to promote more air flow through the unit. My spouse was concerned about the energy consumption of this unit, but it is roughly half of other 40-pint units - approximately 330 W. If you combine this with the quiet operation, compact size, and tolerable aesthetics, this unit is tough to beat. I would purchase it again.
One odd thing occurred with the shipping. When the unit arrived, there were roughly a dozen wood screws embedded in the cardboard box underneath the shipping straps. Fortunately, none of them damaged the unit so I didn't complain to Amazon, but it was a strange occurrence.

The only thing worse than our damp basement was the rumble of our old Goldstar dehumidifier. Not only could you not have a conversation or watch TV when it was on, it heated up the basement tremendously. In shopping at Lowes and Home Depot, etc., I noticed that there werent many dehumidifiers on the market (two or three brands at the most) and NONE advertised quietness as a feature. I searched [...] for quiet dehumidifiers, and this model, The Soleus Air CFM-40 pint, had the highest ratings (5 stars). I bought it and must say that I could not be happier with a product. I bought this for a ground level basement where I store books. So far I'm quite pleased with its performance. It's small enough to fit just about anywhere, light, and easily movable (I honestly don't understand the criticisms of its weight and wheels/castors).
Although not as quiet as I'd hoped, the "Quiet" setting is not awfully distracting. The three humidity levels offer a fair amount of customization, and the 40 pint storage capacity is probably fine for most practical uses.
As other reviewers have noted, the heat generated by the unit is proportionate to the humidity setting (lower the humidity = more heat put out). That would be my one criticism of the product if it was not offset by merely turning the AC down a degree or two.
A good buy. I highly recommend it.

I am surprised by negative reviews on this product. We've had this dehumidifier for about three years and have had no problems with it at all. We keep it running continuously every single day. There is absolutely no motor sound...the only sound it makes is the air it blows out, which can be adjusted. Ours is in the basement, and we empty it everyday. (My husband refuses to attach a hose for automatic drainage because he likes to make sure it's working.) It tilts and rolls and is similar in size to a carry-on suitcase, but a little heavier. (I am a fairly small woman and can carry it up and down stairs with no problem.) I am back to buy another to keep in our attic. This beats the pants of the GE/Kenmore/Black&Decker units we've had over the years, which were very noisy, very heavy, and not as effective.

We purchased this dehumidifier through Amazon about six weeks ago (great price; fast, free delivery - thanks Amazon!). In short, this item is exceptional in every respect. We bought a brand new house that had been vacant for a year. The basement had a strong, musty smell and we moved in during the high-humidity season. We washed out the basement, purchased this dehumidifier, and let it run at the highest and driest dehumidification (about 50% ambient room humidity) settings. Our basement is approximately 1,000 sq. ft. and this unit completely eliminated the musty odor in about 4 days. That was quite impressive given that the basement had been in a stinky state for almost a year. The basement was so damp and humid that we were emptying the ample water canister two to three times a day. That eventually leveled off to once in the morning and once at night as the dampness in the basement subsided.
We were not particularly concerned about how noisy this unit would be since it was intended to only occupy our undeveloped basement. However, even at the highest dehumidification setting, this unit is remarkably quiet and cannot be heard until you're practically right in front of it. At the "quiet" setting, it is virtually silent. We have had no problems with the unit at all and it has been running constantly for six weeks. It puts out a little bit of mildly warm air while running but probably not enough to significantly change the temperature of most rooms.
This is the first dehumidifier we've ever purchased so we can't really compare it to anything else but, based on our experience with it so far, we would join most of the other folks who reviewed it here and highly recommend it.

I tried so many different conventional dehumidifiers; Whirlpool, Maytag, Sears, LG etc. They were ALL sooooo noisy. They all seemed to have the problem of making the air very warm! They all were returned in a few days! The Soleus is so MUCH better, first it's very quite and second it doesn't create an oven in the room, also it doesn't draw anywhere near the power of the other units. I use it for a basement, I have a tube that connects directly to the sink and in humid summer will bring the RH down to the 50% range, which is plenty dry! From May to October the unit is on, kicking on and off as needed. Basement is large about 900sq ft

I bought this about five years ago for use on my sailboat berthed in San Francisco. I selected it based on reviews and the fact that it was mostly made of plastic, which won't corrode and is less likely to damage the interior when it is bounced around. Other than when we are sailing, it operates quietly 24/7 to keep the interior of my 48-foot boat dry, mold-free, and free of that musty "boat smell." I secure it in a head when we are sailing and racing, but otherwise I don't take special care of it. To get a sense of how cold and humid it is in our area, one winter month my boat was being serviced and the dealer didn't turn on the dehumidifier. Black mold grew on several cushions within a few weeks, which has been impossible to clean completely. Hint to boatowners: have the dehumidifier drain to a sink and close all the vents on your boat or else you'll futilely try to dry the incoming sea air. I have a double sink and set up the dehumidifier to drain into the plugged larger sink. When it fills, it overflows into the unplugged sink. This way I can make sure it is actually working (it can fill up the larger sink within a week). I used to use several "Air Dryrs" in the past, but they really didn't work and were a hassle to set up. The one negative about the Soleus unit is that if the shore AC power is cut off on the boat, the dehumidifier will not turn itself back on.

We have spent this summer attempting to find a tolerable dehumidifier. Of the 5 brands we brought into our home, the Soleus CFM40 and CFM25 were the only ones reasonable to use in a space where people live. It is truly quite. It actually pulls the water out of the air. It does not leak. It does not produce astounding amounts of heat.
It's draw backs are: 1. Even though it is weighs about half that of dehumidifiers using traditional compressor technology, it is still rather hard to move due to having casters instead of wheels. 2. The water catcher is more cumbersome to remove with grace than in other brands.

This product works very well. Reduced relative humidity in my basement from around 70 to around 45. The biggest issue is removing the water reservoir and how full it gets. I have a hard time pulling it out without spilling it and I have had to put a pail next to it to spill the water out right away cause carrying the reservoir anywhere is an adventure. They could have fixed this by putting a lid on this thing somehow.

We got this dehumidifier for our 1400 square foot basement, and put it in the unfinished section which is about 650 sq ft. We leave the door open going into the finished area so that it can hopefully remove some of the moisture in there as well, although they say that it can't really work through walls or door opening. You sort of need one per room. This dehumidifier collects so much water that we can hardly keep up with emptying it out. within hours of turning it on you could feel the difference in the air, and the container was full. There is also a direct drain option if you would rather let the water drain outside instead of in the container, and then you don't have to worry about emptying it. It doesn't overflow because there is a safety feature to shut it off when the water gets to a certain level. We love our Danby!

We bought model DDR3008EE in 6/08. It worked well at first, but in Fall 2008 ate a lot of power, and its anti-icing function appeared to stop working. We didn't use it over the winter. We turned it on in 7/09 and found its coils would not cool. Other than the fan blowing air, it was totally non-functional. A local shop confirmed that the coolant had leaked out. It took many calls to Danby just to finally get a human being instead of a machine. The man told me Danby couldn't help us as the 1 year warranty had run out. We paid $242 for this piece of junk. We won't ever buy a Danby product again.

This unit has done more than I expected it to do. It has eliminated our moisture problems caused by a steamy bathroom without an exhaust vent. Really like the size of this unit and it starts right up when you plug it in. Easy to operate and move to any location n the house. It is quiet for a dehumidifier. Only complaint is that the plastic shield to direct air flow is flimsy. We tried to redirect the flow and it fell off. When you try to put it back on it is difficult and one pin broke. Luckily the shield is more window dressing, as the unit works well without it. It has a nice extra feature of an ionizer to purify the air. Not sure if this really works, but we have all breathed easier since we have run this dehumidifier in our home.

I've had this dehumidifier for 4 days and have already emptied the bin 4 times, so I know it's working. The controls are simple to use, and it's very easy to remove and replace the bin. My only negative comments are that it's not very quiet - the fan has been on constantly and it's louder than I anticipated. Also, to keep my humid basement at 50% humidity I have to empty the bin before I go to sleep and before I leave for work to prevent it from filling up and shutting off. I'll have to rig up a hose...

SPT SD-46T 46-Pint Dehumidifier, purchased 3 years ago.
Good: Quiet on LOW, slick design, UV lamp, fancy red light when bucket is full, energy efficient - using "rotary compressor", etc.
Bad: Developing heavy icing after two seasons of use. Humidity indicator was not accurate, it reads about 10-15% less then it should.
I used this unit in my finished basement for two summer seasons. It worked fine and was quiet on Low. It kept humidity at 55% working continuously and bucket was full in 24 hours. I was not able to get humidity any lower. Maybe I needed more powerful unit. At the end of the second summer season ice started to develop on coils. Ambient temp was about 70 F. To fix icing I did everything what usually recommended: I cleaned filters, coils, put fan on HIGH, used additional external fan. Nothing helped - ice started to develop in 1 hour of work. Unit is supposed to have a de-icier, but it apparently was not working. I 'goggled' the problem - experts say that refrigerant might be low. As we may not recharge it SPT SD-46T 46-Pint Dehumidifier might go to trash soon.
Week ago I ordered Danby 70, which just as quiet and able to keep my basement at 45% when running continuously. So far - so good. Maybe this one will go to trash in two ears too :-).
Do not buy. This dehumidifier is quiet, but it does not collect much water.

I purchased this unit based on the manufacturer's claims of quiet operation and a 46-pint capacity. I had purchased a Kenmore 50-pint unit from Sears, but I was not happy with the noise level of that unit.
I was impressed with the SD-46T's noise level. Very quiet. The UV light seemed to be a good idea, though I am not sure how to verify it is killing bacteria.
When I receive the SD-46T, I decided to compare the performance with the Kenmore machine for a few days. I placed them side by side and monitored the water levels. After 2 days, the Kenmore machine was full. The SD-46T, with a much smaller tank, was less than half full. I continued the side-by-side comparison for a few more days, and found the same result. Sears/Kenmore = Full, but noisy
SD-46T = Small amount of water, but quiet.
I chose to keep the noisy Kenmore that dehumidifies very well, and I returned the SD-46T.
Amazon's return system is awesome! I completed the return form on-line, printed the pre-paid shipping label, then dropped it off a PacMail. Very convenient.
Busted Product & Company REFUSED to Resend

The product arrived and was covered in goo. After determining it was broken, I requested the company send another one to my home address (the original was sent to my work address). Sunpentown refused to send a replacement of the product, even when I said it could be delivered to the original address. I was the object of multiple accusations by the company representative of my breaking the product, along with derogatory comments about me because of my complaint about the broken product. After a week, the company reimbursed the full charge after threatening not to.
